Frequently Asked QuestionsIn what form are these herbs? All the herbs listed on My Bulk Supplements are in a powdered form. What do the different numbers mean? Example: 4:1 or 3% The first one you mentioned is 4:1, as an example let us use one ounce, which is a concentration method meaning that there are four ounce to every one once of finished product. Lets say that 1TBS equals 1 gram of a given herb and you need 4 grams to be affective. You would probably need to make a tea or your own extract to consume 4TBS of that herb. Not to mention you wouldn't be able to be sure from one time to the next of the effectiveness. But on the other hand, when we attempt to "standardize" an herbal extract we usually pick a chemical marker and attempt to quantify it in the final extract even though it may not correlate with the effect that we are looking to achieve. So you can look at that 4:1 as a more "natural" concentration then the standardized form. Some times it works and some times it does not. The next one is 3% which is a standardization figure. Standardization is a hard task which starts from the biomass obtained possibly cultivating the plant according to Good Agricultural Practice (GAP), to the chemical isolation and characterization of active reference substances, to setting up validated analytical methods and finally to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) production of the final ingredient. As far as the standardization of extracts is concerned, the aim has to be the reproducibility of all the chemical components contained in an extract, including the unknown ones. An extract normally contains several classes of substances, some of which are active principles, whilst others can be their natural vehicles or they are inert substances. What is the best way to take these extracts? |
